Dropping Dimes One-on-One Tourney: Round 1, Games 3 and 4
Our one-on-one tournament continues this week, with two match-ups that fall within the theme of “David vs. Goliath.” What happens when you pit a 7-footer against a star who gives up more than six inches in height? Could Jordan have taken Wilt or Bill Russell or Kareem in their prime?
First we recap our results from last week: Lebron vs. Kobe and Arenas vs. AI.
Game 1: Kobe Bryant vs. Lebron James
Thanks for the the three write-in votes. Everyone gave Kobe the nod. In this instance, I stand with the crowd. Kobe is in his prime in terms of talent and experience, and on top of that possesses the killer instinct that is ideal in this kind of format. At this point in their careers, out of ten games, I would guess Kobe wins at least seven of them. Defensively he has the skills to lock ‘Bron down. Offensively, Kobe can get to the hoops against anybody. So sorry, Lebron, as much as we love your bountiful fantasy game, you are first round fodder. Winner: Kobe Bryant
Game 2: Gilbert Arenas vs. Allen Iverson
The votes did not decide anything: one vote for Arenas and one for Iverson. As 4:20 (probably our biggest fan, thanks for the support!) put it, this one is pretty much a coin-flip. So it falls on me to break the tie. AI, I have the utmost respect for your game, but I am going to back Agent Zero. Iverson still has the edge in overall speed, probably, but like AI, Arenas has the knack for stealing the ball. And once Arenas grabs the ball, he could very easily bomb treys and shoot his way into the next round. This really is a close one to call; I figure out of tem games, at most one of theses guys wins six of them. In this single-elimination format though, today I choose Hibachi! Winner: Gilbert Arenas
Thanks to all who have voted and/or have taken the time to read this feature so far. Please feel free to comment on any or all future match-ups! The rules are simple. 32 of today’s biggest stars, plus some fantasy forces and a few players of the “x-factor” ilk have been chosen to participate in this exercise. Assume each player is in perfect health and in peak condition, based on their current age and abilities. In other words, when Shaq makes his appearance here, assume we are talking about a healthy Shaq today, not the best Shaq has ever been, or an injured Shaq. Suppose these players play each other in a game of one-on-one: games to 11, two points for a three-pointer, and winners out. You can make your comment after each article, or if you like, send me an e-mail at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Please vote just once for each match-up. If you are so inclined, feel free to make up an imaginary commentary of how you see the battle going down and I will try to include your input in future articles. I am sure Dennis, Sarge and Ron will give me their “10 cents” on the topic when their schedule permits. Of course, if everyone is feeling shy, I will just call it as I would see it! You have one week to vote, then the results will be published and a new pair of match-ups will be announced. So check back here every week!
Game 3: Dirk Nowitzki vs. Dwyane Wade
The Mavs are on the brink of being eliminated from the playoffs! Golden State barely made the playoffs, but they are making some serious noise. And much to my chagrin, the Raps got lambasted in New Jersey…it must been all those fans wearing purple that threw them off. Oh, wait a sec, those were the empty seats. What is up with any city having so many tickets available come game time for a playoff game???
In this rematch of sorts of last year’s Finals, Flash takes on Dirk. The Heat have been swept away. But remember this is a healthy Wade we are talking about for our tourney. Wade has made game, but as the old adage preaches, you can’t teach height. Dirk’s game might not be as smooth…right up until the point where his shot torches the twine again and again. This is a great match-up; time to give your 10 cents on the topic and vote!
Game 4: Tony Parker vs. Ben Wallace
Props to the Bulls for sweeping the defending champs right out of the playoff picture. Certainly Big Ben has been a worthy addition to the Bulls. But are his best attributes found in the team game, that of rebounding and team defense, able to translate to this tourney? Sure, he has the big edge in size, but Parker is slick and quick. Still, he stands alone against Ben: no TD to pass to, no Manu to help him out. Does Tony get enough open shots to pull this one off?
Take care, and check back next week for the results AND the next pair of match-ups!

Dirk. Typically, I’d take a guard over a big man, if the guard can shoot from beyond 20 feet. Wade doesn’t have enough of an outside presence to take Dirk. Oh, and assuming it’s a self-officiated tounament, he won’t get to the line 20 times on bogus calls. Nowitzki all the way.
And I’m going with Parker on this one. Even if he does only get off a few shots, Ben Wallace has no offense. He could back down Parker to the blocks and still toss a few off the glass. Bonus points for Parker if he gets to have Eva watch from the sidelines…

I’m going with Wade in the first match-up. Dirk can shoot over Wade anytime he wants, but if he puts in the floor Dwayne is swiping the rock. Dirk can’t handle Wade off the dribble.
The second match-up is Parker in a laugher! He’ll run Ben right out of the building/

Okay, in the first matchup between Dirk and Flash, I really had to think about it, which stinks because I have three brain cells and they fight with each other constantly.
Now the decision was a hard one, but I have to go with Wade on this one because I just think he can go on a scoring binge more than Dirk. As 4:20 said, Dirk can’t handle Wade off the dribble and I think that’s all Wade will do - take it to the rack. So, Flash’s limited range is made moot. Plus, Wade has this friend called “Will.” Will, being a great friend really helped out last year… this year not so much since Wade was beat up… but we’re talking peak health in this tournament and it will definitely be mind over matter in this very close matchup.
There is no question TP just takes Big Ben off the dribble EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Ben is quick for his height, but there are some fast guards that can’t even hang with TP when he penetrates into the box.

“I have three brain cells and they fight with each other constantly.”
You’re 33% ahead of me…
I have two playing catch with a thought, and neither of them are wearing a glove.
