Shareff Abdur-RahimIt’s a sad day in Fantasy land.  Former Grizzlie/Hawk/Trailblazer, and current Sacramento King Shareef Abdur-Rahim has called it quits.

Now, most of you may be thinking, “what does Shareef Abdur-Rahim have to do with fantasy basketball?”  True, SAR has not had an ounce of fantasy relevance in the last handful of years.  However, there was once a time when Abdur-Rahim was a lock for 20 points, 10 boards, a block and absolutely killer percentages from the power forward slot.

Granted, this was over 10 years ago, but check out these games played numbers during the early part of his career:

96-97: 80
97-98: 82
98-99: 50
99-00: 82
00-01: 81
01-02: 77
02-03: 81

Aside from the injury-plagued 1998 season  You did not get much more consistency than you had with Abdur-Rahim.  Think of the high draft picks going towards guys like Yao Ming these days.  How good was this guy?  Factor in the point that he hasn’t been the same since leaving Atlanta back in 2003, and then look at his career averages of 18 points, eight rebounds, a steal, 47 percent from the floor, 81 percent from the line.  And while his retirement will not exactly leave a hole on the Sacramento Kings, I’ll always remember the days that SAR led me to a few titles back in his heyday.

Scott, is that injury-plagued ‘98 season the one they had lockout and played only 50 games?

I knew that looked odd.  Thats what happens when you post quickly from work…thanks!

Nice, Sarge. I thought about a tribute to ‘Reef, but you were obviously more on the ball.

In his heyday, Shareef was a very solid fantasy player. Modern day comparison would be David West, maybe?
