Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 4, Pick 7 - Corey Maggette

Corey Maggette

Corey Maggette now plays for the Golden State Warriors. Baron Davis left the Warriors for the Los Angeles Clippers, where Maggette used to play. Elton Brand left the Clippers to play for the Sixers. It made for a fun off-season and perhaps this picture shows us that Maggette enjoyed himself during the process. Okay, not really. But after considering lesser offers to play for the Celtics or the Spurs, Maggette signed on with a team where he can certainly thrive statistically.

Admittedly, picking Maggette here is earlier than in most drafts. However, after drafting guys in the first three rounds who are no lock to clear 17 ppg, shoring up the points is needed. Every other team in the league is bound to employ at least one 20 ppg scorer and although the point category is not as sexy as steals or blocks, it certainly should not be a category you punt.

Round 4, Pick 7: Corey Maggette, SG/SF, Golden State Warriors

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 4, Pick 6 - Chris Kaman

Chris Kaman and Dirk Nowitzki

This team needs a center. Dirk Nowitzki remains a very safe and reliable first round pick, but he lost his center eligibility years ago, his defensive stats have been in decline. Plus, although he picked it up at the end of the year, overall his three-point shooting is not enough of an impact to negate the lack of blocks and relative lack of rebounds. Baron Davis and Paul Pierce represent an exciting and formidable fantasy back-court. That next level tier of guards comes up in the fifth and sixth rounds, so it is a green light to go big here.

Currently this guy has an average draft position of 49.0 on Yahoo, so we tab him a bit earlier than that here at 42nd overall.

Round 4, Pick 6: Chris Kaman, C, Los Angeles Clippers

The Fig Cap: Hey Dirk, we get to roll together on this team just like Team Germany!

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 3, Pick 7 - Paul Pierce

Paul Pierce 24 shot clock
In Dirk Nowitzki and Baron Davis, this team has a pair of versatile fantasy studs. So it is time to draft the “best player available,” right? But are you not always trying to draft the best player available? I suppose that double-talk came from the notion of not drafting due to positional needs or off-the-court issues.

This man continues to ride high on a championship wave. A little over a year ago, he wanted to be traded. Now people mention him as being hall of fame material. That’s the “Truth.”

Round 3, Pick 7: Paul Pierce, SG/SF, Boston Celtics

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick 6 - Baron Davis

Chris Kaman and Baron Davis

The Fig Cap: “Hey, B-Diddy, you’re wearing your old uniform, bro.”
“WhatyoutalkingaboutChris?!?!?!?”

Baron Davis will be taking the Boom Dizzle down from NorCal to SoCal as he will no longer sport his beard in the Yay Area, but instead in the City of Angels where no doubt his ability to drain buckets (and miss them like he was Stevie Wonder), drop the rock (bathroom humor not intended), and be a threat on the floor will no doubt thrill the fans at the Clip Joint!  Yes… I’m talking about the Los Angeles Clippers and, believe it or not, it’s totally possible for their fans to be thrilled.  Seriously.  Why are you laughing?

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick 5 - Marcus Camby

Marcus Camby

The Fig Cap: Upon hearing news of his trade from the Nuggs to the Clips, Camby replied, “NOOOOOOOOOOO!”

Yeah, Marcus Camby is no longer a Denver Nugget, which absolutely makes no sense considering he was traded for an OPTION of a second round draft pick from the Los Angeles Clippers.  Yes, Camby will be in the Clip Joint, but how happy will he be going from a playoff-caliber team that has the presence of Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony to a team that historically “messes it up.”  Okay, so the signing of Baron Davis could work out very well for the Clips, but still… it’s the Clippers!  Which is why I don’t understand how they got Camby for NOTHING!  Yeah, I know… the Nuggs were shedding salary and clearing up cap space.  Ugh… still ugly.

What WON’T be ugly, however, is getting the Camby Man on your fantasy squad.

Andris Biedrins Makes Me Nervous

Andris BiedrinsThis may just be the skeptic in me, but I think I’ll be staying away from Andris Biedrins this year.  He could be my “contract year” guy of yesteryear, that simply won’t put up numbers worth the money he’ll be getting paid.

After signing Monta Ellis to a new lucrative deal, the Warriors used up another $60 million on the Latvian big man with the crazy-spiked hair.  With Elton Brand going East, and Baron Davis going to L.A., the Warriors may have felt that they’re just going to roll on with a core group of guys; and $120 million of that will go towards the aforementioned pair.

Baron Davis/Elton Brand, Mickael Pietrus Out, Corey Maggette In

Corey MaggetteI don’t know who I even thought I was kidding yesterday when I mentioned Corey Maggette taking less money to play with a contender.  Who did I think he was?  Gilbert Arenas?

But with the dust settling, it looks like Maggette will suit up this season in Oakland where he will be running along side Monta Ellis, Captain Jack and the rest of the Warriors.  Baron Davis and Mickael Pietrus will be elsewhere, freeing up plenty of touches for the former Blue Devil.  We’ve already laid out his weaknesses, but with the swingman playing on a team that could not care less about stopping another team from scoring, he will fit right in.

Expect plenty of points with the ever-solid percentages.  Mid-round selection, here we come…

About Corey Maggette

Corey Maggette While Bill Plaschke pours his heart out to Elton Brand in L.A. and Golden State fans are still hoping they’re just in a bad dream, the rest of the NBA is looking at the rest of the free agent pool - with one of the bigger names out there being a former Clipper in Corey Maggette

Magg’s fantasy value has always been in his scoring efforts as well as his contributions in terms of efficiency.  One of the better free throw shooters in the league, Maggette typically finds a way to get to the rack or cash in from the stripe if hindered.  Never much of a rebounder or defender..or three-point shooter for that matter… some have been a bit touchy with drafting someone that could only help in select categories.

But this value may be on the rise (or the fall) depending on where Maggette lands…

Elton Brand Has Some Decisions to Make

Elton Brand

While we followed up on the recent Baron Davis news not too long ago, this game of musical chairs appears to be far from over.

The Warriors appear to have been caught off guard by Sir Davis leaving for Los Angeles, thus have decided to start hurling contract offers all over the league.  Word came out that Chris Mullin and crew made an offer to Washington’s Gilbert Arenas - but he appears to be staying put.  So, next on the list?

Former (and possibly returning) Clipper power forward Elton Brand

Exodus from the Bay?

Wow, that didn’t take long.  As discussed briefly yesterday, Baron Davis looks to be relocating intrastate, as he has reportedly agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Clippers.  While Bill Simmons picked a crummy year to not renew his season tickets, the Clips could be looking at a starting five of Davis, Cuttino Mobley, Quinton Ross, Elton Brand and Chris Kaman.

Yes, I left Corey Maggette off of that list as his money will likely now have “Baron Davis” written on the paycheck.  As Nels broke down here, this doesn’t exactly bode well for those that were planning on using an early pick to select Davis in the fantasy world.  Even worse if you were counting on Brevin Knight.
