Sleeper Alert: DeMarcus Nelson

DeMarcus NelsonIn the fantasy basketball ring, one thing is for certain: the Golden State Warriors will score a lot of points.  For this reason, we had Monta Ellis going in the second or third round of most drafts until he injured himself in that now infamous moped accident.  When the accident happened, we tapped former New Jersey Net Marcus Williams as the man to flourish.

But not so fast.  Williams has disappointed big time, and has been shelved by Don Nelson as “third string.”  So who gets the playing time?  DeMarcus Neslon, that’s who.

Fig Cap: What do you get when you combine Marcus Williams with Don Nelson?

Injury News: Down Goes Monta Ellis

You won't be seeing this for a few months… Um…Not good.  Especially if you’re a Warriors fan or a keeper league owner with Monta Ellis on your roster.

Per ESPN’s Marc Stein:

In the latest blow during a difficult summer for Golden State, ESPN.com has learned that Ellis—just awarded one of the biggest pay raises in league history—will be sidelined at least three months, possibly four, after suffering a severe high ankle sprain in his hometown of Jackson, Miss.

Ellis was scheduled to undergo surgery on his left ankle in Alabama on Wednesday, according to team sources, after he informed the club late last week that he had injured himself working out. More specifics about how Ellis sustained the injury were not immediately available.

Now while the megadeal that the Warriors gave Ellis isn’t looking so hot.  However, picking up Marcus Williams in one of the quieter moves of the season could wind up paying huge dividends - especially early on.  Those that were hoping to add Williams as a sleeper this season will have to bump him up their draft sheets a bit as this news is bound to make said “sleeper” not so much of one any longer.

Andrea Bargnani - Fantasy BasketballWire to Wire aims to be your waiver wire resource for all of your fantasy basketball needs. It will dive into playing time trends, injury replacements, and even an occasional category specialist—all of which can be found on a typical waiver wire within your fantasy league at any given time.

If you have followed this column from the beginning, you know that I am a sucker for big men and point guards.  Last week, I felt that I had shorted the readers a bit, recommending a slew of ‘tweener types, like Ryan Gomes, Marko Jaric and the like.  Well, with Jaric deciding to put up near triple-doubles and then following those games up with next to nothing, I’m going back to my old ways.  Injuries in Cleveland as well as a possible big-named trade in New Jersey pave the way for this week’s edition of WtW.  Enjoy.

Due to scheduling, the NBA didn’t exactly give us a large sample size to choose from over the last few games.  Thankfully (depending on how you look at it), players in the Association do not need a lot of time to injure themselves, providing opportunities for the average fantasy basketball fan.  While a few of these names may ring a bell, we’ve had a few new additions this week.  The first men you should thank?  Start with Marcus Camby and Baron Davis, as their annual injuries pave the way for the future stars of the NBA.  On to this week’s recommendations.

Rookie Radar: 11.22.06

Adam MorrisonWell, a lot to talk about this week, with lots going on in the rookie scene.  Brandon Roy is out longer than expected, and a few Jazz rookies are beginning to make an impact.  Overall, it was a great week in general for most rookies, and these rankings are going to be a little Jazzed up (pun intended).
1. Adam Morrison (Up)

Even if Brandon Roy wasn’t out, I’d still probably give Morrison the top spot.  Although he had a bad game Monday (just 7 points), he’s been a beast in the past week, playing over 37 minutes in each of his last four games.  He dropped 21 points and seven boards against the Hornets on the 14th, and followed that up with a huge 27 point game against the Spurs the next day, playing 48 minutes in the overtime win.  Morrison is playing huge minutes, and with huge minutes come huge scoring, which he has shown.

Rookie Radar: 11.13.06

Adam MorrisonThere haven’t been any downright fantastic rookie performances yet this year, but some rookies have played pretty well.  Brandon Roy, everyone’s favorite rookie, had 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists against the Warriors on Friday, November 3rd.  Rudy Gay must have gotten a lot of girls (there’s the first lame joke you’ll hear from me) after his 21 point, 8 rebound, 4 block game against the Knicks Wednesday, November 1st.  Shelden Williams has an incredible 1.000 FT % this year (OK, so it’s only 2-2, but still, give the man some props).  Kyle Lowry had 10 rebounds on opening night against the Knicks, which is kind of weird.
Anyway, since we are a pitiful brood that needs to be reading and researching fantasy basketball 24/7, and probably some of you out there have never had a girlfriend (it’s OK, at least you still have your favorite team), I’ll start a very preliminary rookie ratings list, examining my top five rookies, and their potential input for our fantasy teams in the future.
