First Look: Thursday, February 12

Well, look at that. A few upsets. WE HAVE PARITY IN THE LEAGUE! Toronto beat San Antonio, Utah beat the Lakers. Denver also beat Orlando at home, and was up pretty big at one point. And that battle of up-and-coming teams we alluded to yesterday? The better team in the current won quite easily. But let’s jump into some lines.
Wednesday’s best: Mo Williams: 44 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 600 three-pointers made. Ok, only 7. Yeah, he must have heard some people STILL complaining about his All-Star credentials and decided he’d go nuts. I saw this game, and he was making some incredible shots. And this folks, is why the Cleveland Cavaliers will win the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Did I just say that? In February? Yep. You heard it here first.
Honorable mention to Ramon Sessions and his 17 dimes. Wow.
Wednesday’s worst: Mike Bibby and his whopping 5 points and 4 dimes on top of 3 turnovers. Somehow the Hawks still topple the Pistons. Things are bad in Detroit.
Keep an eye on: The Phoenix Suns. They lost to the Cavs tonight in their last game before their break, and probably their last game with this roster. Keep an eye on things because here’s something scary: Steve Nash sat out. It was various aches and pains, and whatever else. Yeah, yeah. What worries me is that he didn’t sit on the bench. Apparently he was in the locker room. Implosion pending…
What to watch for tomorrow: I wonder if anyone will actually try tomorrow. What a tough day to be a coach, when half your team is double-checking its tee times or RSVPing for parties in Phoenix. Good thing there’s only three games, but two are semi-interesting. The Celtics stop in Dallas on their way to the All-Star Game, and Portland takes on Golden State. That second game would be fun to watch, but somehow it’s not the TNT game. Oh well.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 3, Pick 9 - Joe Johnson

Surprisingly, Joe Johnson saw an uptick in dimes per game in the second half of last year, the half where Mike Bibby was manning the point for the Hawks.
This is promising news for those trying to make JJ your number one PG this year. Although he has more value sitting alongside a true PG and manning your SG slot, he’s a viable PG given that you draft accordingly. He was 16th in assists per game last year, behind guys who haven’t yet been taken in our mock. But at the same time, he averaged 4.5 boards per and over 2 threes a game.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick 12 - Josh Smith

I need to admit something; I have a serious man-crush on Josh Smith. I do not mean the stalking or restraining order type of crush. It is a crush on Josh Smith’s stat-stuffing ways and what he can contribute to one’s fantasy b-ball team, especially in blocks.
I remember the fascination began in his rookie season. It was a cold December day and during my daily routine of reviewing basketball box scores, there was a game between Atlanta and Detroit and Josh Smith had four blocks. I remember reviewing his game logs prior to the Detroit game and noticed that he had registered at least a block in the four games and back then he was SG/SF-eligible which was an added bonus. I plucked Smith off the waiver wire and plugged him into the lineup. Later in the month, Josh Smith registered 10 blocks in a game at Dallas!! I guarantee Josh Smith was claimed off every waiver wire after the Dallas game. J-Smoove single-handled won the blocks category during my H2H match-up that week!
I was able to draft him in the following season and since then Josh Smith has eluded my fantasy team. This year might be the year that I will re-ignite the man-crush with Josh Smith. Have a peep and see why you should share my man-crush with J-Smoove.

The Fig Cap: Hey, where are you watching the second round?
Man, do I have some big shoes to fill or what? Pinch-hitting for Alvin today, I get to break down what could be two of the best match-ups we’ve seen thus far.
While we get to see who won last week’s battles, this week brings us a few big-named bigs against two big-named guards as well as a match-up that features the recently crowned Rookie of the Year facing a former two-time MVP. While you will likely be able guess at least two of the eight from these clues alone, let’s check out the rest of the field.

Props to Sarge for his piece that landed on Yahoo sports. If you are into baseball, check it out. I asked Sarge for his secret to success once. He said it helps to be really, really, really good looking. We all can’t be Zoolanders like Sarge, but we can keep things rolling on in our two-on-two tourney.
Yao Ming continues to sit out of this year’s playoffs. His Houston Rockets showed some guts by winning Game 3 in Utah, but they now head home down 3-1. Regardless of the the goings on in the real world, his name has been called to step onto the court for our tourney, where we assume he is at full health and in peak condition. Who gets to partner up with Yao? Check it out.

Beyond the Arc: Week 20

I think over the last few weeks, the NBA fan has taken over me and pushed the fantasy fan aside. I mean, if you are a true sports fan, how can you not be on the edge of your seat as we enter the last few weeks of the regular season? At the time I’m writing this (Friday afternoon, before the games) only seven games separate #1 from #9 in the West. And #10 isn’t out of it yet either. This is great.
Have we seen a better race to the finish in any sport? Baseball is always close because so few teams make it. But could a team sitting in 9th today end up in the Finals? It’s not out of the realm of possibility. This year was a HUGE win for the NBA. They stayed away from any controversy (Spygate and steroids anyone?) and pulled off a huge humanitarian effort/All-Star Weekend. What a great year it’s been and kudos to David Stern and all his people in the league office.
Let’s jump into the schedule for the next week (3/10-3/16):

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007: Round 6, Pick 5 - Andre Miller

Andre Miller is not flashy. At all. He averages a whopping 14.1 points over his career. He’s probably never dunked a ball. There is nothing exciting about the man at all. So why do fantasy owners love him? His 7.6 career assists.
He’s the perfect compliment to a team who doesn’t have an All-Star point guard, or one that plans on going cheap at the position. I mean come on, I’m getting all these assists halfway through the draft. So what’s wrong with the guy? Nothing, and that is why he’s a perfect pick at this stage.
So if you didn’t get Steve Nash or Gilbert Arenas or you want some security for injury-plagued Baron Davis or the declining Chauncey Billups, keep your eyes peeled for Miller. You’ll like him more than Stephon Marbury or Jameer Nelson and their bad percentages later on, I promise you.

Alright the fiancée is in the next room… I have a confession to make… I have a man crush on Mike Bibby, okay let me clarify I have fantasy basketball man-crush. I am not attracted to his latte colored skin nor do I think his headband highlights the shape of his eyes. I just think that Bibby is a solid fantasy player. For the past three seasons, I have either drafted or traded for Mike Bibby in at least one of my fantasy basketball leagues. I can’t really pinpoint what started the infatuation. Bibby is not a top five point guard. It could even be argued if Bibby is a top 10 point guard, heck, in our mock draft he was the 13th player taken that can be slotted in the PG spot!
