The NBA Draft: What I Learned
Posted by Scott Sargent Categories: NBA Draft, NCAA, Rookies, Talent
The NBA Draft came and went quicker than a Vegas night’s sleep. All of the mocks that preceded, and all of the commentary that followed seemed to roll right along with what most of us felt prior to the “big day”: No one has any idea what is going to happen.
Yes, the Rose-Beasley combo was at the top of many lists. But who in the world thought that a top guard would fall to Indiana, and then they would trade him away? Who thought that Darrell Arthur would fall into Brady Quinn territory? Who knew that the Lopez brothers both sounded like they took turns playing South Park’s Ned?
While we were blindsided by several different events of the evening, the clay has been shaped for what will likely be yet another interesting season. And the best part? The roster moves are far from done.

Prospect Pro Specs: Michael Beasley

The Knicks had the fifth worst record this past season. How would “Be Easy” play in the Big Apple? The educated guess would have to be the Knickerbocker faithful would be supremely pleased if the ping pong balls dropped their way when the draft lottery takes place. The Knicks have a new coach in Mike D’Antoni. Who wants to bet he will miss the desert when he’s trying to turn Zach Randolph and Eddy Curry into the new Amare and Matrix show?
How the Knicks get made over will be one of the stories to follow this summer. Will it be another “cold” lottery card that lets the Knicks land the big prize on draft day? (Look into the Patrick Ewing draft conspiracy stories if you do not know what I’m referring to.)

Prospect Pro Specs: O. J. Mayo

The NBA crowd did not get much of a chance to see O. J. Mayo in March as his USC Trojans lost in the first round to Michael Beasley and Kansas State. The hype around Mayo has been noticeable for a couple of years now. If not for the NBA’s age-related draft eligibility rule, chances are Mayo would have skpped out on the college experience to head straight for the pros.
Cue all the condiment jokes/references e.g. hold the mayo and all that. This guy’s gonna make a GM, a franchise and their fan base pretty excited for next year.

Dime Day: Four Quarters of New York Knicks

Every so often on Dime Day, “Four Quarters” will feature one particular NBA team, going ten players deep into their roster. Whether it’s a small tidbit of news on the bench-warmers, or an opportunity to give major props to the all-stars around the league, as always we slant it towards the fantasy side of life.
Thanks to Dennis Velasco for the assist this week. He gave me some local tidbits of information on his beloved Knicks. So let’s dig into the Knicks roster and see what’s happening

Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 7, Pick 8

Dennis Velasco, our resident New York Knicks fan has passed on this guy a total of 20 times during this draft blog. Not that this is any indication of this player’s perceived fantasy value, as in the drafts that I have seen, he has often been drafted before this point in our draft blog. With his ability to score he has lots of value in a two-center league. It is just a matter of whether reality can see eye to eye with those expectations by the end of the year.
Round 7, Pick 8: Channing Frye, PF/C, New York Knicks

Dropping Dimes’ Expert Roto League: Dennis Velasco’s Team

The Dropping Dimes Experts League draft was held on Thursday, October 12th, 2006. Perhaps some of the fantasy owners in the field wanted to hex the rest of the league Friday the 13th style, as they were milking the clock down as early as the first round! No big deal though, because unless you are in college and stacked your schedule such that you have no class on Friday, what better activity is there to do on a Thursday night than a fantasy basketball draft? (Note to our readers: I do not follow either Grey’s Anatomy or ER, though I hear both are quality televsion shows.)
We have asked our fellow team owners to send us their answers to our questions re: their newly minted fantasy squad. First up, who else…our head honcho, Dennis Velasco!

Andres Nocioni is the “Argentinean Pitbull.” He is relentless on defense and fearless in crashing the boards. Case in point in the picture, Nocioni is giving a lesson to the New York Knicks on how to grab a rebound. In fact, I will wager my NYC counterpart that Nocioni will out rebound both Eddy Curry and Channing Frye this year!

“I take it back. I’m not the best point guard in the league… Dennis Velasco is the best point guard in the league.” This quote is what was waiting for me when I left this blog entry open this morning. I had not even written anything myself yet, just put in the picture. Dennis is channeling “Big Brother” here and sees all. Not only that, he changes news and history to suit his wishes. Talk about an abuse of editorial power. Hahaha!
If you counted on Marbury last year to be your top guard, point or otherwise, there is a good chance your team ended up stinking up the joint. Ron and I recently visited NYC with some friends. Whether it was the aura of walking the streets of the Big Apple, or a friend wanting to give his friend a chance to write about his man-crush, who knows what has Ron going with “Stabury” here. So I am going to guest-write for Ron and the team he has started here, and he will take on my next pick. As always on Dropping Dimes, let’s break it down.
Round 4, Pick 4: Stephon Marbury, PG, New York Knicks.
