Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 3, Pick 10-Andre Iguodala

Andre Iguodala and Elton Brand

The Rob Babcock era was a very painful time for Raptor fans. His drafting woes were highlighted by fellow writer Alvin, with the team taking a pass on Danny Granger twice in the 2005 NBA draft. What about the gaffe from the previous draft in which Babcock drafted Rafael Araujo before Andre Iguodala! Rafael Araujo is now manning the middle for Spartak St. Petersburg of the Russian Basketball Super League. Aggghhhh!

This season there is a lot of hype in Philadelphia around the 76ers, as they signed the much-conveted free agent Elton Brand. Let’s see what effect Elton Brand will have on Iggy’s numbers.

Round 3, Pick 10 – Andre Iguodala, SG/SF, Philadelphia 76ers

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 10 - Allen Iverson

Allen Iverson

Allen Iverson will be 33-years-old at the start of the upcoming 2008-09 NBA season, but does age really affect Allen Iverson?  Well, “the answer” (sorry, bad pun intended) is an emphatic NO!  Iverson seems to be an immortal on the hardwood and will be entering his 13th season in the league.  Wow, so I feel old.  I still remember when AI crossed over Michael Jordan in Iverson’s rookie year during the 1996-97 season.  SICK!  And, guess what?  Iverson can still make it happen on the hardwood and therefore, your fantasy basketball squad.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick 8 -  Elton Brand

Elton BrandA long time ago, when I went to back to school in the fall, one of the assignments I always looked forward to was the “What you did over the summer” write up. It gave one the opportunity to recall the events and experiences of the past summer. Can you imagine if Elton Brand had to do a write-up for this past summer? It might read something like “…woke up one morning and decided to opt out of contract that would have paid me $16 million this season…looking for new long term contract with the Clippers…new PG Baron Davis joins Clippers and noted that he would like to ball with me…get a phone call from agent that Philadelphia 76ers are interested…decided the lure of Philly steak sandwiches was too much and sign with the 76ers for 5 years, $82 million …” Damn, what an eventful summer for Elton Brand?! It makes that family BBQ of mine look kind of boring.

Dime Day: Iverson Watch

DescriptionHow is it that news that the NBA will go back to the original ball gets the marquee headline over the pending trade of Allen Iverson? It could be that we have seen this song and dance before. Trade speculation and A.I. have gone hand in hand for years.

Unfortunately it’ll be a while yet before I can resume contributing to this blog regularly again. Until then, Sarge and Dennis will have to hold it down. Still, despite the time crunch, the allure of thinking about a superstar being traded, and whether the real life GMs can gets ideas from us fantasy counterparts has me churning out this edition of Dime Day (even if it’s a few weeks and one day late).

Samuel Dalembert
Have you ever heard of Dusty Rhodes? Dusty Rhodes, the pinch hitter extraordinaire for the 1954 New York Giants, not Dusty Rhodes, the wrestler. That year Rhodes hit .341 with 15 homers and 50 RBIs: incredible production from only 164 at-bats. The Giants, with Willie Mays as their star, won the World Series that year.

We here at Dropping Dimes will not win anything like the World Series while our star, Dennis Velasco, attends to other matters. But the least I can do is pinch-hit for the guy. He made the pick; I wil provide the words.

Round 7, Pick 3: Samuel Dalembert, C, Philadelphia 76ers

Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 5, Pick 9

Chris Webber

My most vivid memory of Chris Webber was the infamous time-out. April 5, 1993, it was the Fab 5’s second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship. Michigan was down by two points to North Carolina with 11 seconds left in the game. Chris Webber got to a loose ball near the sidelines. Two Carolina players converged on Webber immediately. Webber puts his hands together to form a “T” in an attempt to call a time-out. Michigan did not have any time-outs left and in resulted in a technical foul which sealed the game for North Carolina. Not the way you want to end your collegiate career.

Last year, Chris Webber played in 75 games. Do you remember the last time Webber played in 75 games? I don’t. You have to go back to the ‘99-‘00 season. Can he do it again?  Or will he take more “time out” from the floor?

Round 5, Pick 9: Chris Webber, PF, Philadelphia 76ers

Andre IguodalaAre you a music fan? One of my favourite music memories of recent years is Snoop Dogg being featured in the MTV Icon tribute to Metallica. Working his unique flow to “Sad But True,” this was proof that sometimes the unexpected works out very nicely. Now, I am sure there are a legion of metal-heads out there that found the same performace blasphemous, but to each their own.

Building a basketball team involves finding underrated or underappreciated players and hoping that they fit in well with the core players already on your team. Here is a player who will fit into any fantasy team and make it better. There are still 20 ppg players available, players who are on everyone’s sleeper list, and players who have played in All-Star games. But I think this pick may not be so unexpected, and he should be on everyone’s hot list already.
