The Fig Cap: “That guy is behind me again, staring, isn’t he?  Can’t say I blame him.”

“Ben Gordon is a one-dimensional player that only scores,” is what many BG Naysayers would, well… say… in a naying fashion.  However, I would retort back, “You’re right!  But, what’s wrong with that, suckas?!?!?!”  Okay, maybe I wouldn’t use the word, “suckas,” but that’s totally dependent on if any of the said naysayers is bigger and more muscular than me.  Otherwise, I’m puffing out my chest, flexing my arms (and shaking uncontrollably since this isn’t a natural thing to do), and putting the mean mug on.  I sort of say it in jest, but is scoring all Gordon can do?

The Fig Cap: Hey, Agent Zero, why so glum?  You’re number one in our rankings!

In “real” basketball, point guard is arguably the most difficult position to play since they are basically an extension of the head coach running the actual plays on the court.  They have to know all the plays to run and have the ball in their hands the majority of the game.  In fantasy basketball, point guards are just as important as they will be your main source of assists and a significant contributor in steals, three-pointers made, and/or free-throw percentage.  Any big-time production in points, rebounds, and/or field-goal percentage are simply gravy on top of the meat.  So, coming into the 2007-08 season, which point guard is tops for the position?  I have one word for you – HIBACHI!

I knew someone in high school who was moody like Rasheed Wallace. Let’s call this person “Harry.” I hung around Harry for a couple of years during high school and he was a cool friend to have since Harry was one of the few students that had their own car during high school. He was very talented and excelled in sports and the arts. You need someone to lean on, Harry was there for you. Harry had a unique physical trait in which he had a small patch of hair that was lighter in color from the rest of his head. One thing you have to understand about Harry is that he is very passionate at times. He could take things personally when things don’t go his way. Harry would throw these tantrums at times and we just left him alone to cool off before talking to him. Eventually, I moved away and lost contact with Harry. Fast forward years later, I remember watching some basketball highlights of Rasheed Wallace going bonkers when he was in Portland. Rasheed had the patch of hair discoloration very similar to Harry. I thought to myself, Rasheed Wallace is the “Harry” in the fantasy basketball world. Rasheed can do a lot of things well but he can go off the deep end at times.

Stat’s All, Folks: Redd Is Back!

Michael Redd is back on the court handling businessThanks to All-Star weekend, there is a small sample size of games to draw from, so I’ll tweak it up a bit this week by highlighting players and giving you blurbs for each one.  There will be no suggestions for players to keep an eye on or ones you shouldn’t believe the hype for.  However, I think you’ll live and all will still be well in your fantasy basketball world… unless you own Dwyane Wade.  Read on at your own discretion, but you may need some tissues.

Last Week’s Numbers of Note: 2 G; 27.5 PPG; 43.5 FG%; 72.7 FT%

Much to the relief of the Bucks and many fantasy owners alike, Redd is back on the court and he’s pretty much picking up where he left off.  It was a little bit shaky in Redd’s first game back as he “only” scored 17 points shooting an ugly 7-for-18 from the field, but his performance the following night allayed any fear.  On the second night of a back-to-back, Redd scored 38 points in 40 minutes, including hitting six three-pointers.  That performance shows that Redd may be getting his game legs and wrists back sooner than later.

Stat’s All, Folks: Melo Is Still Da Man!

Carmelo AnthonyStat’s All Folks will be a week-to-week stock market look at the standard cumulative categories – points, assists, rebounds, three-pointers made, steals, and blocks.  I’ll be calling out the “bulls” and “bears” in each category, in order to help you assess your portfolio of players on your fantasy basketball team(s) and whether you should sell, hold, and/or diversify your assets. 

Note that you won’t always see the superstar player written about in this column, otherwise it would be LeBron James or Steve Nash every week.  So, check out who’s bullish and who’s bearish coming into the week.

Last Week’s Numbers of Note: 4 G; 29.5 PPG; 44.1 FG%; 76.2 FT%

To all the head coaches in the Western Conference that did not choose Anthony as an All-Star reserve, I agree with you.  That one punch and immediate backpedal against the New York Knicks was enough to sully all the hard work Melo had put forth in cleaning his rep beforehand.  But, this is fantasy and whether you love him or hate him in real life, it doesn’t matter here.  What also doesn’t matter is that Allen Iverson is now on the same team as Anthony because Melo is still getting his looks and scoring near his seasonal average since coming back from serving his suspension – 30 ppg in six games.  In fantasy, you shouldn’t snub Melo, even with the Answer in Denver.

Stat’s All Folks: T-Mac Is Back!

Tracy McGrady, SG/SF, Houston Rockets
Last Week’s Numbers of Note: 3 G; 33.3 PPG; 56.5 FG%; 55.6 FT%

In the past week, McGrady has been playing like the T-Mac of old and not like an old T-Mac.  In each of his three games, McGrady has scored 31, 38, and 31 points, respectively.  And it hasn’t even been a fluke sort of deal where he just jacked up forty or more shots to get his points.  Look at the field goal percentage above too.  Taking 23 shot attempts per game on average is a lot, but again, look at that percentage from the floor!  No wonder McGrady’s been scoring so much and it speaks well for his health as well, being able to hit that many baskets at a high rate.  I won’t declare him “back” because of the lingering prospect of back spasms that sidelined T-Mac earlier this season, so throw out some feeler deals for more durable players.  Otherwise, hold T-Mac and hope he stays healthy.
