First Look: Tuesday, February 10

Only four games last night, and to be honest, four pretty crappy games. Not too surprising to see New Orleans fall without David West or Chris Paul in the lineup and the same goes for Phoenix losing to Philadelphia, because well… Terry Porter is still coaching the Suns. But let’s jump into it.
Monday’s best: OJ Mayo: 22 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, one three, 7-17 FG, 6 TO. Yeah the turnovers suck for sure, but wow, who knew he had 16 boards in him? He also went 7-8 from the line. Honorable mention goes to Emeka Okafor and his 19 points, 16 rebounds, and three blocks in a win over the Clippers.
Monday’s worst: Tracy McGrady: 3 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, on 1-9 shooting from the field and 1-3 from the line. Yuck. Good thing Luis Scola and Aaron Brooks stepped up, even though the Rockets still managed to lose to the Bucks. Really? Don’t you just pound it into Yao every trip down without Andrew Bogut down there? Guess not. (He had 7 points.)
Keep an eye on: Marreese Speights. I saw this game live and Amare Stoudemire probably played his worst defensive game all year. Spieghts went off for 24 and 7, including 2 blocks. He looks like the real deal. Reggie Evans got the minutes in Elton Brand’s first game out, but Speights has now pieced together two nice games. He’s worth some consideration at least.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 3, Pick 10-Andre Iguodala

The Rob Babcock era was a very painful time for Raptor fans. His drafting woes were highlighted by fellow writer Alvin, with the team taking a pass on Danny Granger twice in the 2005 NBA draft. What about the gaffe from the previous draft in which Babcock drafted Rafael Araujo before Andre Iguodala! Rafael Araujo is now manning the middle for Spartak St. Petersburg of the Russian Basketball Super League. Aggghhhh!
This season there is a lot of hype in Philadelphia around the 76ers, as they signed the much-conveted free agent Elton Brand. Let’s see what effect Elton Brand will have on Iggy’s numbers.

Luis Scola Can Flat Out Ball

Luis Scola was quite a hot commodity in the later rounds of last year’s fantasy hoops drafts. After a roller coaster season that saw several 20-point nights followed up by single-digit disasters, Scola showed the world once and for all that Rick Adelman simply needs to run a few plays through his power forward (with center-eligibility, mind you).
In the Olympic game versus the United States, Scola lit up the scorers table with 28 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and two blocks. And while the Olympics makes players like Carlos Delfino look like All-Stars, remember that this was against an American team that featured Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh down low.
Sure, the addition of Ron Artest will not help matters much, but if the Rockets plan on flourishing in the crowded West, the road to success may be through a guy who averaged under 25 minutes per game last season.
Dropping Dimes Two-on-Two Tourney: Round 1, Games 5 and 6

Props to Sarge for his piece that landed on Yahoo sports. If you are into baseball, check it out. I asked Sarge for his secret to success once. He said it helps to be really, really, really good looking. We all can’t be Zoolanders like Sarge, but we can keep things rolling on in our two-on-two tourney.
Yao Ming continues to sit out of this year’s playoffs. His Houston Rockets showed some guts by winning Game 3 in Utah, but they now head home down 3-1. Regardless of the the goings on in the real world, his name has been called to step onto the court for our tourney, where we assume he is at full health and in peak condition. Who gets to partner up with Yao? Check it out.

Wire to Wire - 12.31.07

Wire to Wire aims to be your waiver wire resource for all of your fantasy basketball needs. It will dive into playing time trends, injury replacements, and even an occasional category specialist—all of which can be found on a typical waiver wire within your fantasy league at any given time.
Can a week go by without a big-named player landing on the injury report? It’s not looking to be the case this week as two of the game’s more prominent small forwards will miss considerable time, and the possible Rookie of the Year may lose a bit of ground. Things are still quirky in the Big Apple, and a trade between Utah and Philadelphia may change the fantasy landscape for a few players. With that said, this will be the last Wire to Wire for 2007. On a night that pretty much lacked spectacular lines, there were a few that still stood out. No triple-doubles today folks. LeBron James got hurt. That’s why.
So did Chris Bosh, who deserves a mention, as he has been heating up nicely of late. Still, there was a surprise scorer, dime-disher, and more than a few rebounders, on a heavy slate of Wednesday NBA action.

But before we get down with what individual players have been doing and could possibly continue to do, it’s time to peep the number of games each NBA team has going on in Week Four of the fantasy basketball season.
