Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 3, Pick 8 - Jose Calderon

Imagine Team USA starring LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and company posing for a picture like this. David Stern would have been on the next plane to China putting out fires and doing interview after interview insisting that the NBA loved its international flavor and that this type of stuff was not condoned at all. Fines probably would have been levied, and big companies might have stayed away from the Team USA stars i.e. it might have been a while before we saw Dwyane Wade and Charles Barkley hawking cell phones again.
It hurts a little extra because the guy picked here plays for my home team, the team I cheer for. My family comes from a Chinese background, and both the photo and the subsequent comments from this man have left a bad taste in my mouth. I even said, “Bring back T. J. Ford” when it first happened. Just as a fan, Jose, this is not the media’s fault, you and your team mates should not have done it, should not have caved if you were being goaded into it and you should have said sorry because you came off as ignorant instead of remorseful.
The moral of the story? Sometimes you have to put aside your feelings about a player and just look at the numbers.

Dropping Dimes on the Daily – November 20, 2007
Posted by Matt Satten Categories: Disses, Editorial, Props, Roto, Site Features, Waiver Pick Ups

The Daily finds what’s shiny each night, brushes off the dirt to reveal any blemishes and then makes a fair assesment in regards to certain players’ fantasy values.
Look at that man on the right. He looks like a natural. He’s so tall, so athletic and oozes potential the way Gilbert Arenas oozes cockiness. He dropped 24 points in 24 minutes last night and he’s center eligible. Sounds like you should act swiftly, right? Not if you know how Swift acts. Only a sucka would pick him up. And you’re not a sucka.

For those of you that were waiting for the return of Dwyane Wade, to a lesser degree, Ron Artest, and to an even lesser degree, Stephen Jackson, your patience will be rewarded this coming week with a full set of games for the week. But before we get down with what individual players have been doing and could possibly continue to do, it’s time to peep the number of games each NBA team has going on in Week Four of the fantasy basketball season.

Anyway, this will be a quick look around the league, so don’t expect a ton of text, just some daily fantasy basketball goodness!!!
The Fig Cap: Oh yeah? But how much was your contract extension?

2007-08 Preseason Shooting Guards Ranking

The Fig Cap: “Hey, D, you got a little mustard on your chin… yeah, right here. Maybe you should stop eating, chubby, and concentrate a little more on these rankings.”
When you think of a shooting guard, you think jumpers, dunks, and basically, a lot of points being scored. While all of that is true, in a fantasy basketball sense, you want players who do more than simply score and add to one to three categories. And when you look at the top shooting guards, you’ll find that they contribute in several categories. Surprisingly, the top guys in the two-guard game drop a lot of dimes, but maybe it shouldn’t be too surprising because basketball is a team game. For your reading pleasure, the top shooting guards who will help your team win the fantasy game.

Dropping Dimes Mock Draft: Round 4, Pick 6 - Ron Artest

The Fig Cap: This is McFarlane Toys’ rendition of Artest. Booty to be slapped not included.
Allen Iverson is the paragon of the “thug” element in basketball’s current era of tattoos, cornrows, mean mugs, and putting out hip hop records. However, AI is the paragon because of all of his offcourt shiznizzle. So, if anyone has been the epitome of “thug” on the court (and in the stands), there is no question that it’s Ron Artest. Sure, okay, fine… why beat a dead horse? We all know about The Malice in the Palace and all that, but I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A POINT!!! In any case, despite the bad rap (and I don’t mean Artest’s record), the Tru Warier has some game and ironically enough, plays lockdown defense. But, that’s not all the boy from the QB can do.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and grandfathers out there. Dropping Dimes is giving props to each and every one of you, including LeBron James and Bruce Bowen, who received new additions to their families during the NBA Finals. The second round in our one-on-one tourney kicks off today, but first we look back on the four players that headlined the past week, and ask them, “Who’s your daddy?”
